With a hearty appetite in

The Black Swan at Oldstead is a Michelin Star Pub and Restaurant with Rooms in picturesque rural North Yorkshire - unique as the only pub in the north of England with a Michelin Star and 3 AA Rosettes.

The original building dates back to the 16th century and is set in a stunning rural location near Byland Abbey, 20 miles north of York. There is a characterful bar, restaurant, a private dining room for up to 12 people and 4 lovely rooms.

The AA says of The Black Swan:

'What isn't there to like about The Black Swan? It is run as a restaurant with rooms by the Banks family, who have lived and farmed here for generations. It's a real family affair, with Tom and Anne Banks working in the bar and restaurant, son James managing front of house and his brother Tommy heading up the kitchen. It's no wonder the place has such a homely, friendly feel, further enhanced by the charming period features and the cleverly designed interiors which lend a real sense of luxury to a visit here. The bar is cosy with its roaring log fire, oak tables and stone-flagged floor, For the restaurant you need to head upstairs where you'll find a charming, uncluttered room with an oak floor, Persian rugs and candles on the tables giving a gentle, soothing glow.'

Menus include a la carte, a 9 course dinner tasting menu, a 6 course lunch tasting menu, a 3 course set lunch and early evening menu and a vegetarian menu.

The cellar provides a breadth of choice from exceptional fine wines to easy-drinking house wines. For flexibility with food matching, there are half bottles and a good selection of interesting wines by the glass. With the tasting menu there is the option to try small glasses of the recommended wines to match the food.

Michelin says of The Black Swan: "cooking is modern and highly skilled but satisfyingly unpretentious"

Andrew Ford, Senior Inspector, with The AA says of The Black Swan:
'Chef Tommy cooks with the seasons and with a great deal of passion and flair, and his menus are full of interesting, exciting combinations as well as some gently updated classics.

The bedrooms are situated in a quiet south-facing wing. All the rooms are on the ground floor and each opens onto an individual terrace with seats. Awarded 5 Stars, Gold Award and a Breakfast Award by The AA. Featuring quality antiques, stylish soft furnishings, luxurious bathrooms with beautiful cast iron roll-top baths, walk-in wet-room shower areas and Molton Brown toiletries.
