The Yorkshire Dales

They are different to standard disabled toilets because they have a:

  • Centrally placed toilet with room either side for carers;
  • Washing and changing area with enough space for the disabled person and up to two carers;
  • Screen or curtain to give the disabled person or carer some privacy;
  • Tracking hoist system, or mobile hoist if this is not possible;
  • Height adjustable adult-sized changing bench;
  • Wide tear-off paper roll to cover the bench;
  • Large waste bin for disposable pads; and
  • Non-slip floor.

We currently have 96 changing places across the North Yorkshire and Humberside region in a variety of buildings. We have produced the following series of guides for each of the districts in North Yorkshire that give details of the changing places available, including details of access arrangements and opening hours. Printed copies are also available by telephoning 80.

The Changing Places Consortium has launched its campaign on behalf of those people who cannot use standard accessible toilets. This includes people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and their carers, as well as many other disabled people. They need changing places toilets which are publicly accessible with enough space and the right equipment, including a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist. To learn more about their campaign please see the national Changing Places website.
