After all this is an area that has inspired many painters and poets over many years and it offers plenty for families to do. North Yorkshire is a wonderful location for hikers, cyclists and horse riders with many trails to be found in and around the area, and Richmond is conveniently situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. For those who enjoy exercise and a good story, there is also a guided tour of the town outlining the ghosts purported to be in the area.

Visitors here will also find numerous places to try some fishing with several rivers, lakes and ponds for fly fishing and other types of angling. There are several golf courses within this part of Yorkshire including Richmond Golf Club and Catterick Golf Club. Richmond Pool has a family pool, children’s pool and visitors can also enjoy a sauna, spa or sun-bed session here as well.

East Yorkshire offers a pleasant mix of eateries such as restaurants, cafes, tea and coffee shops and public houses, with food from many different parts of the world to cater for all tastes. There is a great choice of shops here along with local markets held throughout the year and a farmers market is held every third Saturday of the month.

There are many interesting places to visit in and around Richmond including several museums and galleries such as Richmondshire Museum and the Georgian Theatre Museum. This is a good location close to many historic buildings and attractive gardens such as Friary Tower & Gardens and Richmond Castle. Horse racing fans may like to take a day out at Catterick Racecourse, which is just three miles from Richmond.

Durham Tees Valley Airport is about 18 miles from Richmond and has flights to and from several countries including Bulgaria, Egypt, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Holland, Spain and Turkey as well as domestic flights from Aberdeen, Jersey and Southampton. There are direct daily train services to and from London King's Cross, linking Yorkshire with the capital city in less than three hours with the nearest station Darlington, which is about 12 miles from Richmond. The town is about four miles from Scotch Corner where the A1 and A66 converge linking the area to the south and the west of England.
